The more you know, the more you Grow
Growing food has become such a passion for me that I am literally thinking about it all year. Every town, organic grocer or hardware store I visit, I always make a point to check the local seed collections. I love growing heirloom varieties that are less common. I love all the different colours and varieties that actually are out there, unlike what we see at most mainstream grocers. Variety is the spice of life.
During the winter months when the weather is dark and gloomy, I dream of pollinators. I reflect on what grew well the past season and where. I will rotate where I place certain annuals, perennials are growing as companions and the amount of volunteers (plants that re-seed) we get increases each year.
Much of the knowledge I carry has come from many years of not only growing, but lots of garden talk. Visiting other gardens and talking to the people who build and care for them. We share plants and tips for growing them. Growing food is like making new friends. You get to know each other better and better each year as time goes on.
Having a relationship with the land is a great comfort for me. The plants always listen and help me reflect on decisions that need to be made or choices that have to be accepted.
