Broad Beans
Broad Beans are one of my favourite cover crops to grow. You can plant the beans in the fall around the same time you pant your garlic & they will be one of the first crops ready to harvest the next year (Do Not plant them together * Garlic will stunt the growth of any kinds of bean.) You can also plant them in the spring as soon as the ground can be worked. Broad Beans prefer the cold, so you can also plant a second sucession early august for a late fall harvest. They are easy to grow, need little staking and grow vertically taking up little space. As a nitrogren fixer, it is a great companion for many other plants, such as tomatoes, kale, cabbage, beats and so on. Broad Beans can be eaten cooked or dried for storage. I often just save my beans for next years cover crop.
